O LJ Braintrust, I beseech thee...
We have a silent auction to raise money for a piano for our new choir room at church next week. Each section of the choir is supposed to put together a basket to be bid upon. The tenor section (of which I am reluctantly a part) has done nothing. Can anyone think of something that will have a large bang for buck in the $20 range? I was thinking about maybe a DVD and some "movie theater" style candy.

I'm totally open to other ideas.

(If anyone is local and gives a damn, the silent auction/talent show with freewill offering is next Sunday, May 17 at 3 p.m. It won't be Jesus-y at all. There will be free cookies and punch. Todd and I are doing a duet. It's at Lord of the Hills Lutheran Church on Smoky Hill between Picadilly and Riviera.)

DVD and movie theater candy/microwave popcorn/etc. works well. Another nifty one I've seen done that won't break the bank is an "Italian Pasta Night" basket--interesting pasta and sauce (not sooper gourmet but one step up), a bottle of red wine (if your church doesn't frown on booze), and some other italian grocery types of things. Add a couple of red-checked napkins, et voila.

That's awesome. I have some red wine handy. I could do that easy. :) Thanks!

Make up a spa basket? You can easily make up a whole bunch of homemade spa stuff for very cheap. Just splurge on a couple nice jars and a basket at a craft store, the rest made with stuff in the kitchen cabinet and a nice essential oil. I've got a book full of recipes if you want me to drop some in your email.

Sent.

I listed a bunch of lemon centered recipes, but if you pick up a few different essential oils, you can make a variety of bath stuff in different scents.

And then you have the essential oils on hand to make homemade gifts for other people. (A little bottle of essential oil will go a long way with the recipes I sent.)

You might also find a local business (salon, restaurant, book store, etc) who would throw in a gift certificate. It ups the value of your basket without increasing your cash outlay. We just did one of these for school and got a great response from local merchants.
