O LJ Braintrust, I beseech thee...

We have a silent auction to raise money for a piano for our new choir room at church next week. Each section of the choir is supposed to put together a basket to be bid upon. The tenor section (of which I am reluctantly a part) has done nothing. Can anyone think of something that will have a large bang for buck in the $20 range? I was thinking about maybe a DVD and some "movie theater" style candy.

I'm totally open to other ideas.

(If anyone is local and gives a damn, the silent auction/talent show with freewill offering is next Sunday, May 17 at 3 p.m. It won't be Jesus-y at all. There will be free cookies and punch. Todd and I are doing a duet. It's at Lord of the Hills Lutheran Church on Smoky Hill between Picadilly and Riviera.)

So there's this chick named Danielle. And she writes music. And sings it, usually to a ukelele accompaniment. And the lyrics are clever and her voice is gorgeous. She's cute, too, if that kind of thing is important to you.

I've been obsessively listening to her stuff on MySpace. And the YouTube videos are adorable, too.

Go look:

http://www.myspace.com/danielleatethesandwich
http://www.youtube.com/user/daniellesmagic
<lj-embed id="7" />

Jiggety jig

We're home. I'm not sure I can even remember everything we did, every amazing experience, but I'll try to set it down here.

We made it to Fort Lauderdale, rented our car, and drove to our downtown Miami hotel. After a quick shower, we drove out to the pre-party, where we met several message-boarders, and got to listen to Edie Carey perform. We were wiped out from traveling, though, and headed back to the hotel to sleep.

We woke, bathed, and met more Cayamo folks while loading up the rental car. After returning the rental and a taxi drive to the port, we surrendered our suitcase and Todd's guitar to the porters, who were aggressive about taking it. He was vibrating and ticked off that they had confiscated his guitar since we saw a ton of people carrying on guitars later.

The embarkation process was relatively easy. We found some friends in line, and boarded the ship. It was overwhelmingly huge. We popped over to the Venetian for lunch, and listened to Jeff Holmes' music while we waited to be allowed in our room. Todd's guitar turned up and was fine, along with our suitcase. I unpacked, he mingled. We watched our boat pull away from port from our "window", which was the TV tuned to the camera mounted at the bow of the boat, but later headed up to the pool deck for yet more music. Dinner the first night was at Cagney's, the steakhouse on board with a "cover charge". Lyle Lovett sat directly behind Todd, and we basked in his reflected glory but didn't bug him. The food was fantastic.

Our first show in the main room was our "Twice as Nice" show with The Indigo Girls. Our seats were in the "nosehair" section, second row, center, and we could see the steam coming off of the cups of tea the IGs had. We had traded our late show tickets to see Lyle Lovett for the next day, so we headed up to the Spinnaker Lounge to watch Marc Broussard and Shawn Mullins. I drifted in and out of sleep due to the rocking of the boat during Mullins' show. We headed back to bed and comfortably slept.

Up early on Sunday morning for Stitch & Bitch, though I ran out of yarn and was waylaid by friends, where we stayed to watch the Indigo Girls and Brandi Carlile perform on the pool deck. After their show, we had our formal picture taken with Amy & Emily. I tried to talk them into a Charlie's Angels pose, but they weren't into the idea so much. There was a nap somewhere in there, but I saw the first of the three Girlyman shows on the pool deck. The music was great, but it was windy and that kept the harmonies from being as impressive as they were in greater shows. We caught Lyle Lovett's 8:30 show and then Shawn Colvin in the Stardust, where she tuned between each song. It was charming, though. Todd went to see Mindy Smith in the Spinnaker late, but I turned in. Not impressed.

Monday we stopped in Samana, Dominican Republic. We went whale watching and saw amazing mom/calf interactions, got some good pictures. This was the only time I was seasick, despite very choppy seas later in the trip. I think it was the diesel fumes. We tendered ashore and wandered a bit. The DR is a third world country, and it showed. There were people begging everywhere, and I know that's how they make a living, but it certainly made me uncomfortable as a decadent American on a cruise to see people scraping together a living by selling us junk and especially the children, painted with tribal markings, aggressively begging for tips. We bought sodas and tendered back to the ship. We watched Glen Phillips (whose music is great, but schtick is amazing) for the first of three shows, had supper, and the third Indigo Girls show of the trip. Again, just awe inspiring. We popped in on both the Zac Brown Band and Oakhurst, but didn't stay for the duration of either show.

Tuesday was in St. Thomas. We stopped ashore to check e-mail and wander the mall. We didn't have the kind of money they wanted us to spend there, and got back to the boat relatively early to nap and play in the Open Jam room. Todd was playing the piano when Vienna Teng wandered by and settled in to join the sing-along. She ended up hanging out with us a bunch on the ship, along with Alex, her backup dude. We saw Girlyman in the Atrium, a much better show without crosswinds, a little bit of Joe Ely, and saw Brandi Carlile's headliner show. It started late and I took off about halfway through it for Glen Phillips' late night show. It was hilariously funny, and he detailed the future in which the zombies will all go to Seattle and Brandi Carlile will be their queen for 5,000 years, stage a zombie renaissance which will be known throughout the universe, and eat lots of brains. I went to bed, Todd hung out at the jam room late, playing piano. At one point, during the afternoon, I was heading back to the jam room to see what Todd was doing, and for like three minutes, I saw Emily Saliers watching over the balcony at him playing. She smiled and took her luggage off the ship. It turned out that he had figured out an elusive chord during "Kid Fears" at Monday night's show and was banging through it over and over while she watched.

Wednesday was Tortola. We wandered the city for a while and dodged traffic and beggars. Bought t-shirts for the kids, and had yet more open jam room and naps. Shawn Mullins played as we pulled away, and we caught the third Girlyman show. I'm in love. We saw Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies play a fantastic show, skipped John Hiatt's headliner show and saw Vienna Teng at a hugely packed show. We wandered later that night and ate at the buffet super late, with Vienna. Fangirl!

Thursday was at sea, and we caught music on the pool deck, Kathleen Edwards in the Spinnaker, and after dinner caught the end of Joe Ely and Glen Phillips' last show. Less zombie talk, but better music, so it evened out. Patty Griffin was our headliner that night, and she was wonderful despite a rolling deck to perform on and hugely high heels. There was more Jam Room in there, too. We were in bed when we heard cheering from below us (where the open jam room was). We dressed and headed down to find Brandi Carlile, Vienna Teng, and others performing. Todd got to do a song with Vienna, which was a huge highlight, at 4 a.m.

Friday we were supposed to go to the private island owned by Norwegian, but the ocean was too rough for us to tender ashore, so we went to Nassau instead. There was a harrowing cab ride, I got sunburned on the beach and had to borrow $10 from other people from the boat to get back to the ship, but it all turned out fine in the end. We saw Edie Carey and Over The Rhine (WOW), and I packed up for us to leave while Todd caught a few final shows, and the last jam.

Saturday, we made it off the ship and sat through the planes to get home. I'd missed the kids and cat, and I am happy to be home, but it was a really magical, amazing experience. I know this reads more like a "what I did on vacation" log than an explanation of how I felt, surrounded by people who really love music, new friends, and magic. When I can get through the pictures, maybe you'll be able to understand.

A-waiting

I've been waiting for this day for about 13 months. It seemed so far off in May when I made the first deposit, ten whole months off. It was still a long way off even at Christmas, when I started assembling various things I'd need on our cruise.

A few weeks ago, I had this huge list of things that absolutely had to get done before we sail off. Nearly all of them did.

Kids are at mom's house.

I am packed. Todd is mostly packed, barring a couple things still spinning through the dryer. The house is a wreck, and that's how it's going to be. No health hazards will be awaiting us when we get home, and that's enough.

Bruce comes to get us in 3.5 hours. I should sleep a little but I'm too het up, which, considering that I've been up for 20 hours already is probably not super brilliant.

So I could clean for three hours. Or I could squee for three hours. Guess which one I pick?

Go to sleep you little baby

So for the first year or so we lived here, Maggie slept in her bed. All night long. She'd wake up, happy and alert, and all would be well.

It sort of crept up on us, maybe with toilet training, but since this summer, Maggie has crawled into our bed every night. She'd creep in between us, steal covers, and throw an arm or leg over one of us. It was sweet, but it's gotten real old.

I realized that the kid snores like a freight train, she sometimes sounds chokey when she's sleeping, and she's always got her mouth open. When we brought this up at the pediatrician appointment earlier this month, we got a referral to an ENT (ear, nose and throat guy).

The appointment was today. First he looked in her throat and said "oh, her tonsils don't look that big. Let's do the flexible camera thingie (he said what it was. I lost it) through her nose and check out the adenoids."

So we tromped across the hallway to the next room. I sat in the exam chair with Maggie on my lap. Anna stood behind us, watching very closely, as they threaded the camera through her nose. Oh. The adenoids are 75% blocking her airway. That's why she sleeps with her mouth open. Hey! Let's look at those tonsils! They're deceptively large -- small on top, huge on the bottom. Also blocking her airway by 50%.

Guess that's why my kid crawls into bed -- she wakes up unable to breathe, freaks out, and feels safe with us.

Anyway, we're going to schedule the surgery to remove her adenoids and tonsils, and figure out a time that works. Maggie got a stuffed dog for being brave and awesome during the procedure, and Anna got a little stuffed frog for being a good sister. Children's Hospital is the bombdiggety. And I really liked the ENT. So that's where that's at. Someday maybe she can sleep through the night in her own bed. And then, so can I.

The Boat

Every time I read the Cayamo boards, I am reminded anew of someone awesome I can't wait to see. Tift Merritt! Shawn Mullins! Emerson Hart!

We're poking through excursion options, and finding something that Todd wants to do that I also want to do is not super easy. 38 days left!

(These are the things I think I have a chance in hell getting Todd to do)

Semana:

Whale watching expedition: $89/pp
This tour is only available January 15th through March 15th. Humpback whales have been wintering near Samana for centuries and thousands of these whales from the North Atlantic migrate to savor the warm, clear waters and to mate. Cave drawings made by Aboriginal inhabitants near the Samana Peninsula depict the spouting whales long before the arrival of Columbus. This Whale Watching Expedition is truly an experience of a lifetime. Note: You may get wet, so dress appropriately and bring a towel. Ride may be rough at times and we recommend you take sea sickness medication. Open-air powerboat is used. Whale sightings are not guaranteed.

Waterfall hike: $69/pp
Upon arrival your guide will provide you with important safety information before starting off along the trail. You'll soon discover Samana in all its natural beauty and diversity. Stops are made along the way as your guide points out areas of interest. Arrive at an area hidden from view of the path that opens to a beautiful cascade which falls to a clear, natural pool. Located in a secluded area, the falls are pristine and visited only by a lucky few. You'll have plenty of time to relax with a cool beverage and swim in the pool of fresh, mountain water before making the return along a path to your waiting transport. A short stop at a ranch house will be made where you may use the restrooms or purchase a beverage before returning to your ship's tender port. Note: Participants must be at least 12 years of age and must be able to navigate uneven surfaces. Wear comfortable clothing, closed-toe footwear or Teva®-type sandals. Wear your swimsuit and bring a towel.

St Thomas:

Coral World: $39/pp
From the three-story Observatory Tower built right into the ocean, descend below the sea to view the diverse marine life. The mid-level of the tower houses a 50,000-gallon predator tank, home to sharks, barracuda and moray eels. The park has several large outdoor pools where you can get close to baby sharks, stingrays, turtles, and a pool where you can touch a variety of invertebrates. You'll also have an opportunity to visit the Marine Gardens, where its 21 aquariums will provide you with an up-close view of the unusual behaviors and organisms of the Caribbean reef. After a while in the park, feel free to follow the boardwalk to Coki Beach, to snorkel and view the tame fish in shallow water or just soak up some sun! Note: Wear your swimsuit and bring a towel.

Skyride to Paradise Point: $19/pp
Soak up the views on the scenic Skyride to Paradise Point. The Skyride takes you approximately 700 feet above sea level to one of the most amazing views in the Caribbean! Enjoy a panoramic vista of the harbor, cruise ships and the hillside town of Charlotte Amalie. The round-trip Skyride ride is 15 minutes, allowing plenty of time at the top to relax with a frozen drink or lunch. The Skyride is located directly across the street from the Havensight Mall. Come at your leisure, as the Skyride runs continuously.

Tortola:
Virgin Gorda Highlights: $70/pp
Take an approximately 40-minute cruise along the Sir Francis Drake Channel to Spanish Town, Virgin Gorda. Open safari buses take you on a 20-minute drive through Spanish Town to The Baths for swimming in the unique atmosphere of mammoth boulders, palms, and sea caves. Travel along the trails and boulders to discover hidden caves and sea pools. Note: Wear your swimsuit and bring a towel. The footpath to The Baths is rough, consists of uneven terrain and goes through small spaces. Snorkel gear can be rented on the beach.

Tortola Pub Crawl: $64/pp
Join the party on this fun-filled tour and groove to the beat of the irresistible tunes of the Caribbean. Tease your tongue with a taste of the local cuisine. Along the way, listen to the island rhythms and see some spectacular views. Note: Participants must be at least 21 years of age and present a valid ID in order to consume alcohol. This tour is not recommended for pregnant women. Your first drink at each stop is included and additional beverages can be purchased.

We totally don't have to go with a cruise-line sponsored excursion, and we could absolutely just go wander around anywhere. I'd like to do at least one of these, ideally. We'll see. :)

I didn't get the church job I really really wanted. This isn't the end of the world, but it's a bummer. Apparently I was first choice for two of the four people on the committee, but third choice for the other two. The winner was first choice for the other two and second choice for the people who wanted me, so they got the job.

Ah, well. Sad, since I was really looking forward to it, but there are other opportunities, and I am in a stable job and not desperate for work, so it could be much much worse.

Attention People in Minnesota Who Like Live Music:

One of our favorite local bands, Something Underground, is playing a show NEXT THURSDAY, January 8th, at Eclipse Records in St. Paul. I have no idea about if the venue is kid-friendly, but the music is.

The band is phenomenally good, ranging from surprisingly good covers (I never thought I'd like to see "No Woman, No Cry" done by anyone, but they make it a pleasure), to kickass originals (my favorite is "One Fish", but others are great, too). Their stage presence is fantastic, and they really are great at making everyone enjoy the show.

Really, you won't be sorry you saw them. Tell them Mel and TD sent you, if you go.

http://www.myspace.com/somethingunderground

Eclipse Records

1922 University Ave W
St Paul, MN 55104
(651) 645-7724‎

I paid for the last of the cruise, and also bought our tickets to Fort Lauderdale. We'll worry about where we're staying the night before the cruise and how to get from place to place in a bit.

Poor, now.

Todd has to get his passport. Which means he has to get his picture taken for it at work some time. Everything else is pretty much ready to go. We're leaving 2 months from today. So it would be really nice if that got done, but ouch, it's another $100.

Parenting win

So I'm not the world's best mother. I do my best. I try to be consistent. I try to set firm limits and still encourage my kids' dreams. I don't think I'll ever be confident that I'm any good at parenting, but I do my best, and that's what I can do. I'm trying to instill values and tolerance and Christian love in my kids, every single day, because those are tools I want them to have in their lives.

Just a few minutes ago, Maggie was playing, narrating her rich fantasy life. She has an imaginary friend, named Aura. I don't know why, that's what she named her. She had two of the three kings from the nativity set and she told them that they could get married to each other, because she was going to marry Aura.

Anna said, "Girls can't marry girls! Boys can't marry boys!" and Maggie said "Jesus says we should all love one another, and when you love someone very much, you get married to them."

Anna kind of shrugged, I told her that I agreed with Maggie's assessment, and Anna went back to boxing on the Wii, while Maggie has continued to enact her dream double wedding to Aura, with the guys with Frankincense and Myrrh getting married next to them.

His letter reads:

"Melanie, the challenges you have overcome in your journey to your college degree inspire me. I know it may not have been easy, but you are an inspiration to me in my faith."

Bless his heart. It means more than I can say.
So for those of you not following my weight loss filter, I've lost 48 pounds in 16 weeks. Yay!

I also graduated from college today.
Melanie cleans her dang house

So in five hours (with about an hour of breaks in there), I got the downstairs DONE.

I still need to wash the bathroom floor, but I'm changing the cat litter Monday, so I'll wait until the box is up to do it.

My goal tonight is to get the stairs, upstairs hallway, and upstairs bathroom DONE (including mopping). Tomorrow I'll finish the kids' room, Monday to Thursday, I'll do what I can in my room (which is the last priority, since no guests belong in there), Todd is in charge of the office.

We're getting there, even though it's a long road. Hopefully with everything scrubbed now it will be easier to maintain, at least through the time everyone's visiting.

Edited to add:

Actually, I'm just sitting here, paralyzed by all I have to do, between the house and schoolwork.
The best game EVER

So. I'm not a huge sports fan, but I love heartwarming sports stories. This is one of those. An improv group decided to treat a regular (not playoff or anything) Little League game like a major league game, with a jumbotron, mascots, NBC Sports, and the Goodyear Blimp. For real.

It's only 4 minutes of your life, and I bet it will make you smile.

<lj-embed id="5" />

More info and behind the scenes stuff here:

http://improveverywhere.com/2008/04/07/best-game-ever/
